A sodium-vapor lamp is a gas discharge lamp that uses sodium in an excited state to produce light at a characteristic wavelength near 589 nm.

There are two varieties of such lamps: low pressure and high pressure. Low-pressure sodium lamps are highly efficient electrical light sources, but their yellow light restricts applications to outdoor lighting such as street lamps. High-pressure sodium lamps produce a broader spectrum of light than the low-pressure lamps, but they still have poorer color rendering than other types of lamps.Low-pressure sodium lamps only give monochromatic yellow light and so inhibit color vision at night.

High-pressure sodium lamps (sometimes called HPS lights) have been widely used in industrial lighting, especially in large manufacturing facilities, and are commonly used as plant grow lights. They have also been widely used for outdoor area lighting, such as on roadways, parking lots and security areas. Understanding the change in human color vision sensitivity from photopic to mesopic and scotopic is essential for proper planning when designing lighting for roadways.

High-pressure sodium lamps are quite efficient—about 100 lm/W—when measured for photopic lighting conditions. The higher power lamps (600 W) have an efficiency of 150 lm/W.

As the high-pressure sodium arc is extremely chemically reactive, the arc tube is typically made of translucent aluminum oxide. This construction led General Electric to use the tradename "Lucalox" for their line of high-pressure sodium lamps.

Xenon at a low pressure is used as a "starter gas" in the HPS lamp. It has the lowest thermal conductivity and lowest ionization potential of all the non-radioactive noble gases. As a noble gas, it does not interfere with the chemical reactions occurring in the operating lamp. The low thermal conductivity minimizes thermal losses in the lamp while in the operating state, and the low ionization potential causes the breakdown voltage of the gas to be relatively low in the cold state, which allows the lamp to be easily started.

 

 


The disadvantage of high - voltage sodium lamp is that it is greatly affected by the supply voltage.Voltage fluctuation in the range can work normally, the power supply voltage is too high or too low, will affect the normal light bulb ignition point and life, high pressure sodium lamp in use should pay attention to the following points:

 

The bulb must be properly wired according to the wiring diagram.The bulb must be used with the corresponding special ballast and trigger.In the light circuit diagram, the upper end of the power line should be connected to the phase line. If it is misconnected to the middle line, the pulse voltage generated by the trigger will be reduced and the lamp may not be started.All the light bulbs use screw caps, which are charged when working.When repairing and changing the bulb, cut off the power and pay attention to safety.The bulb needs to be fitted with the right light fixture.When burning point, the light that via lamps and lanterns reflex should not be concentrated on bulb, lest affect the normal burning point of bulb and life.In the meantime, should not make lamp holder temperature is above.In important occasions and occasions with high safety requirements, sealed, explosion-proof bulbs or other special tools should be used.After the light bulb is turned off or extinguished, it must be cooled for 15 minutes. When the bulb temperature drops, it can be connected to the power supply and started again.Hot starting can easily damage or burn out the bulb.If the bulb is self-extinguishing during use, check whether the contacts in the circuit and lamp holder are in good condition, whether the power supply voltage fluctuates greatly, and whether the ballast and trigger are damaged.If normal, can start again;If it still goes out, it means that the bulb cannot continue to work and must be replaced.Avoid contact with water or cold objects during ignition, otherwise it may cause cracking.The high pressure sodium lamp of different specification must match the ballast of corresponding specification, bulb and ballast cannot match arbitrarily.Small power bulb with a large power ballast, will lead to the bulb working current is too large, service life is shortened, and even make the bulb burned out
